Along with CERN, The LEGO Group, National Geographic and Scientific American, today Google launched the second annual Google Science Fair, the largest online science competition in the world, open globally to students ages 13-18. Either individually or in teams of up to three people, students pose a question, develop a hypothesis and conduct science experiments to test it. The entire process is detailed and submitted online, via a website template participants fill out themselves, so all you need to participate is curiosity, an Internet connection and a browser.

Google just added automatic mobile rendering in Google Sites for iOS 3.0+ and Android 2.2+ devices, and a mobile version of the Google Sites lists.

By going to General settings under More actions > Manage site and clicking on Automatically adjust site for mobile phones, your Google site will be automatically adjusted whenever it’s viewed from an iOS or Android 2.2+ device.

Chromabrush is a sample painting application written using the latest HTML5 technologies. It is intended to be a demonstration of how HTML5 can be used to create a rich web app, but is not intended as a production tool. Stability: Google have had near 100% uptime since our initial launch, and we’ve worked behind the scenes to make goo.gl even stabler and more robust.
Security: Google have added automatic spam detection based on the same type of filtering technology we use in Gmail.
Speed: Google have more than doubled our speed in just over nine months.

To access the new website and start taking advantage of these improvements, simply type “goo.gl” in your web browser and hit enter. There you’ll find a simple interface where you can quickly shorten a URL.

If you sign-in to your Google Account, you’ll see a list of URLs you’ve shortened in the past. GWT 2.0.4 is now available, to solve Safari crash

Recently Apple released Safari 5, which included a bug where non-integral right-shifts were not being evaluated properly. There were several reports, both internally and externally, of GWT-based applications unexpectedly crashing when running in Safari 5 (including Google Wave).

Google have a fix for this issue, plus several other house keeping items that have been rolled into a 2.0.4 release, which can be downloaded from GWT’s main download site.

If you’re experiencing the Safari crash, you’ll need to recompile and deploy your GWT app. The changes in 2.0.4 are completely compatible with your existing 2.0 app, and should have no negative impact.

Starting today, Nexus One users will begin to receive the Android 2.2 (codenamed Froyo) over-the-air software update on their phones. This update provides some great new features including support for making your handset a portable hotspot and support for Adobe Flash within the browser. For a complete list of everything we’ve included in Android 2.2, please see the Android 2.2 Platform Highlights.

In order to access the update, you will receive a message on your phone's notification bar. Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set. This update will be rolled out gradually to phones - and most users will receive the notification by the end of the week . We hope you enjoy these new features.

Official Google Blog: An update on China

Ever since we launched Google.cn, our search engine for mainland Chinese users, we have done our best to increase access to information while abiding by Chinese law. This has not always been an easy balance to strike, especially since our January announcement that we were no longer willing to censor results on Google.cn.

We currently automatically redirect everyone using Google.cn to Google.com.hk, our Hong Kong search engine. This redirect, which offers unfiltered search in simplified Chinese, has been working well for our users and for Google. However, it’s clear from conversations we have had with Chinese government officials that they find the redirect unacceptable—and that if we continue redirecting users our Internet Content Provider license will not be renewed (it’s up for renewal on June 30). Without an ICP license, we can’t operate a commercial website like Google.cn—so Google would effectively go dark in China.

That’s a prospect dreaded by many of our Chinese users, who have been vocal about their desire to keep Google.cn alive. We have therefore been looking at possible alternatives, and instead of automatically redirecting all our users, we have started taking a small percentage of them to a landing page on Google.cn that links to Google.com.hk—where users can conduct web search or continue to use Google.cn services like music and text translate, which we can provide locally without filtering. This approach ensures we stay true to our commitment not to censor our results on Google.cn and gives users access to all of our services from one page.

Over the next few days we’ll end the redirect entirely, taking all our Chinese users to our new landing page—and today we re-submitted our ICP license renewal application based on this approach.

As a company we aspire to make information available to users everywhere, including China. It’s why we have worked so hard to keep Google.cn alive, as well as to continue our research and development work in China. This new approach is consistent with our commitment not to self censor and, we believe, with local law. We are therefore hopeful that our license will be renewed on this basis so we can continue to offer our Chinese users services via Google.cn.

- All patents available through Google Patent Search come from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Patents issued in the United States are public domain government information, and images of the entire database of U.S. patents are readily available online via the USPTO website.

- Google Patent Search covers the entire collection of issued patents and millions of patent application made available by the USPTO'from patents issued in the 1790s through those most recently issued in the past few months. We don't currently include international patents, but we look forward to expanding our coverage in the future.

- To date, the USPTO has made available approximately 7 million patents and over a million patent applications.

Google Chrome for Linux, It's NOT Beta now!

If you are running the Google Chrome for Linux beta version on ubuntu, you have to un-install it before install the Stable version.

To un-install Google Chrome for Linux Beta on ubuntu:

Click System from the top menu -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager

Type Chrome in the search box

Then click Apply

Keeping up-to-date on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill

It is estimated that at least 6 million gallons of oil have leaked into the Gulf of Mexico since the Deepwater Horizon explosion a month ago. Cleanup efforts are underway, but the oil has spread extensively around the Gulf and along the southern U.S. coastline. Oil has begun washing up on the beaches of Louisiana and the delicate wetlands along the Mississippi River, and can spread to Florida and throughout the Gulf as weather conditions change. This sequence of images, coming from NASA’s MODIS satellites, illustrates the movement and growth of the oil slick over the past few weeks:

Google Virtual Keyboard element

With the AJAX Language API for Virtual Keyboard, you can enable the onscreen keyboard on any textfield or textarea in your webpage. This will help your website users to type in any language using their familiar keyboard layouts.

What is a virtual keyboard? A virtual keyboard is used to translate the input from one keyboard layout to another.

It allows users to type their own languages on foreign keyboards, when they're traveling abroad, or living in a country where their language is not official, and the like.
For disabled users that cannot use a physical keyboard, onscreen keyboard provides an alternative way to type by mouse clicking.
Another major use for an on-screen keyboard is for bi- or multi-lingual users, who continually need to switch between different character sets and/or alphabets.

Adding a virtual keyboard to your site just got easier with the Google Virtual Keyboard element. After choosing a keyboard layout, copy and paste the HTML into your page and voila, a virtual keyboard will be able to enter characters into any text input or text area on your page.

Announced 3/22/2010:

Google stopped censoring their search services—Google Search, Google News, and Google Images—on Google.cn. Users visiting Google.cn are now being redirected to Google.com.hk, where Google are offering uncensored search in simplified Chinese, specifically designed for users in mainland China and delivered via Google's servers in Hong Kong. Users in Hong Kong will continue to receive their existing uncensored, traditional Chinese service, also from Google.com.hk.
